The 4 BE’s: Our Schoolwide Expectations

Our schoolwide expectations, known as the 4 BE’s, are the foundation of our behavior culture and an essential part of our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) system.

The 4 BE’s are simple, memorable, and powerful. They guide how we treat ourselves, how we treat others, and how we take care of our school. By practicing these expectations, students learn responsibility, empathy, and leadership — skills that support learning and success far beyond the classroom.

The 4 BE’s

  • Be Prepared: Come ready to learn and contribute. Bring what you need, follow directions, and focus on doing your best.

  • Be Respectful: Use kind words and actions. Listen to others, include everyone, and take care of shared spaces and materials.

  • Be Responsible: Make good choices, own your actions, and follow through on what’s expected of you.

  • Be Safe: Follow school rules, use materials and equipment correctly, and look out for your own safety and the safety of others.

These expectations apply everywhere — in classrooms, hallways, the cafeteria, playground, restrooms, and even online. When students know what’s expected, they are more confident, make better choices, and contribute to a positive and supportive school community.

Teaching the 4 BE’s

At the start of the school year, and throughout the year, we teach and model the 4 BE’s across all parts of campus. Teachers and staff show students what these behaviors look like in real life and give them opportunities to practice. For example:

  • In the classroom: Being prepared means bringing materials and focusing on the lesson.

  • On the playground: Being respectful means including others and taking turns.

  • In the hallways: Being responsible means walking calmly and keeping hands to yourself.

  • In the cafeteria: Being safe means staying seated while eating and cleaning up after yourself.

These lessons help students see that behavior expectations aren’t just rules but they are life skills.

Our Behavior Expectations Matrix

The matrix below shows how each of the 4 BE’s looks in different school settings. We teach and revisit this matrix regularly, and students are encouraged to use it as a guide to help them make positive choices throughout the day.
