🏆 Battle of the Books: A Literary Knockout! 📚

Get ready to cheer, Silver Oak parents, because the dust has settled on another incredible Battle of the Books competition, and we are bursting with pride for our amazing student contestants!

Each year, our literary gladiators—students from 3rd through 6th grade—dedicate their summer to diving into fantastic books, all in preparation for this epic, fun, and fast-paced literary showdown!

We have two expertly curated book lists: one for our eager 3rd and 4th graders, and another for our savvy 5th and 6th graders. The competition was fierce, the answers were quick, and there was much excitement from all our students today. 

3rd & 4th Grade Showdown

• The Penguin Readers (3rd grade) brought their A-game but were ultimately out-read in a thrilling final round by the triumphant 4th-grade team, the Chapter Champions!
• A huge round of applause for the Chapter Champions, who took home the title for this bracket!

5th & 6th Grade Grand Finale

• In the older grades, the Cybercats (5th grade) faced off against Da Funky Monkeys.
• It was a battle of wits that came down to the wire, but in the end, the Cybercats proved their literary dominance and secured the championship!

We are so incredibly impressed by the dedication, teamwork, and sheer reading power displayed by every single participant. They read, they studied, and they competed with tremendous spirit.

What a joy it is to witness our Silver Oak students celebrate reading with such enthusiasm. This fantastic, friendly competition proves that a love of books is the ultimate competitive advantage.

Battle of the Books Finals Set for November 13 — Families Invited to Cheer On Our Readers

The excitement continues as our Battle of the Books competition moves into the semi-final and final rounds! Next week, teams will face off in fast-paced matches that test their reading comprehension, memory, and teamwork. Parents are invited to join us for the final battles on Thursday, November 13, in the Silver Oak multipurpose room.

The 3rd/4th grade team finals will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 5th/6th grade team finals at 9 a.m. Come cheer on our incredible readers as they compete for this year’s Battle of the Books championship titles and celebrate a season of hard work, collaboration, and literary fun!

Books, Battles, and Tons of Excitement This Week!

November 7 Update: This week’s Battle of the Books competitions brought another round of exciting match ups as students moved deeper into their single elimination battles. In the 3rd and 4th grade bracket, the Golden Readers earned a strong win over 6-7-4-1, securing their spot in Elimination Round 2. Cosmic Crashers also advanced after a solid performance against We Like Drippy Cheese. Our 5th and 6th grade teams continued their momentum with intense Round 1 and Round 2 battles. Da Funky Monkeys claimed victory over Sunlight Sisters in their match up, and Saber Cats came out on top against Midnight Alters to advance in the bracket. Competition continues to ramp up as teams move closer to the finals. Battle of the Books Heats Up as Teams Enter Elimination Rounds

October 31 Update: Silver Oak’s Battle of the Books competition is heating up as teams showed their knowledge, strategy, and teamwork this week! Our 3rd and 4th graders kicked off their single elimination rounds with high-energy match ups and plenty of excitement. The Very Smart Kids clinched their victory over the Librarian Legends with quick thinking and strong teamwork, while the 6-7 Kings took the win against Legendary 67 after answering a flurry of challenging questions correctly. Meanwhile, our 5th and 6th grade readers continued their practice rounds, showing impressive improvement and enthusiasm. The Golden Readers and Book Burglars earned wins earlier in the week, while the Lightning Readers and CyberCats wrapped things up with strong performances later in the week. Next week, our 5th and 6th graders will finish their practice rounds and advance to single elimination battles, while our 3rd and 4th graders complete the first round of eliminations. To see the latest results and the updated competition schedule, visit the Tournament Schedule & Results tab at the top of this page.

October 23 Update: Our 3rd and 4th grade teams wrapped up their preliminary rounds this week, and the 5th and 6th grade teams kicked off their first battles! Students are showing fantastic sportsmanship, fast thinking, and excitement as the competition heats up. Congratulations to all teams for competing with focus and respect. October 17, 2025 Update: We are off to an amazing start with the Battle of the Books! Our 3rd and 4th grade teams have experienced their first round of battles this week. It was an exciting week as the students took risks hitting buzzers, to win the chance to answer the question first. It has been a great learning experience for the students in managing the pressure that comes along with thinking quick on their feet. They have all done an amazing job being respectful to each other and showing good sportsmanship. 2025 Battle of the Books Teams

Battle of the Books Begins Soon

Our Battle of the Books teams have officially formed, and practice rounds are about to begin. 3rd and 4th grade teams will start practice rounds next week, and 5th and 6th grade teams will begin the week of October 22.

Many of our student readers have been preparing all summer and can’t wait to showcase their knowledge as they begin competing. This year, we’re thrilled to have 20 teams and 116 students participating. 3rd and 4th grade competitions are expected to begin the third week of October, while 5th and 6th grade teams will start competing the first week of November.

Meet the teams and students participating in the 2025 Battle of the Books competition.

Eligibility and Team Formation

• The competition is open to students in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.

• Each team must consist of four to six students from the same grade level.

• Students will form their own teams and submit team names along with the names of their team members.

Match Structure and Rules

• Each match will have a questioner and a timekeeper/judge. The judge will keep track of the score on the score sheet. 

• Teams are responsible for reading the assigned books listed on the website.

• A match will consist of 24 questions. In the event of a tie, three additional questions will be asked to determine the winner.

Question Format

• Questions will alternate between teams.

  • For example, Team 1 will receive the first question. If Team 1 cannot answer, Team 2 may attempt to answer.

  • If Team 1 answers correctly, the next question will go to Team 2.

Answering Rules

• The team member holding the buzzer must answer the question. The buzzer will rotate to the next teammate after each question.

• Teams must wait until the question is fully read before answering.

• Teams have 30 seconds to confer and answer the question. If unanswered, the opposing team has 5 seconds to respond.

Scoring

• 1 point will be awarded for each correct book title.

• 1 extra point may be earned if the original team correctly provides the author’s last name.

• If the opposing team answers a passed-over question correctly, they will not earn the extra point for providing the author’s name.

Additional Rules

• All students must remain seated during the match.

• All judges' decisions are final.

Sportsmanship and Behavior Expectations

• All participants are expected to demonstrate good sportsmanship throughout the competition.

• Teams should be respectful to their opponents, judges, and teammates, regardless of the outcome of a match.

• Cheering for other teams and showing encouragement is encouraged. Negative comments, poor behavior, or unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated.

• If a student or team displays inappropriate behavior, the judges may issue a warning or disqualify the team from the competition.

Competition Rounds for Grade Levels

Bracket Selection

• At the first meeting, students will randomly select a number from a hat to determine their placement in the double-elimination bracket.

Double-Elimination Bracket Overview

• Format: A team must lose twice to be eliminated from the competition.

• Bracket Structure:

  • There are two brackets: a Winners' (W) Bracket and a Losers' (L) Bracket.

  • All teams start in the W Bracket for the first round.

  • Teams that lose in the W Bracket move to the L Bracket.

  • Teams that lose in the L Bracket are eliminated.

  • Winners from the L Bracket will play the remaining W Bracket team to determine the overall grade-level champion.

Grand Finals for Each Grade Level

• The last remaining team in the L Bracket will face the undefeated W Bracket team in the Grand Finals.

Handling Odd Numbers of Teams

• If there is an odd number of teams, the team assigned the first seed will receive a bye into the second round and will face the winner of the first match.

School Championship

• Each grade level will crown a Silver Oak BOB Grand Finals Grade Level champion, who will advance to the Silver Oak BOB School Championship.

• Matchups

  • The 3rd-grade Grand Finals champion will compete against the 4th-grade Grand Finals champion.

  • The 5th-grade Grand Finals champion will compete against the 6th-grade Grand Finals champion.

• The School Championship will take place during an assembly in front of the student body.

Awards and Recognition

The overall winning team will win the title and recognition as Silver Oak BOB Champions.

About

Battle of the Books is a national reading incentive program sponsored by Silver Oak PTO that our students have participated in since 2012. Silver Oak students who will be in grades 3-6 in fall are invited to challenge themselves and join the fun! 

Book lists are published at the end of each school year so students can begin reading over the summer.  In the fall, 3rd-6th graders that choose to participate will form teams and compete in a game show style venue where two teams face off at a time to answer questions related to any of the stories on their list. There is no cost to participate in this program and all Battle of the Books are available in the Silver Oak Library.

Competition takes place in October and November. The top two teams for each grade level meet in the Championship Competition to see which 3rd/4th grade and 5th/6th grade teams win the Battle of the Books. The overall winning team will win the title and recognition as Silver Oak BOB Champions.

Your reading adventure starts now—with the books on our Battle of the Books lists. Students can spend their summer exploring incredible stories, unforgettable characters, and thrilling journeys. These books can be found at our school library or borrowed from the San Jose Public Library.

The Battle of the Books is a fun and voluntary reading competition where students can test their knowledge of great books in a friendly match-up with classmates. It’s a fantastic way to explore different genres, boost reading skills, and get ready for the big event this fall. Silver Oak students have proudly participated in the Battle of the Books for 13 years, building a strong tradition of reading and teamwork. This program is proudly sponsored by Silver Oak PTO and encourages students to read books that are just right for their grade level. Below are the reading lists for Grades 3–4 and Grades 5–6.
