Battle of the Books Is Almost Here—Parent Volunteers Needed!

Silver Oak students in grades 3–6 have spent their summer reading this year’s books in preparation for the competition. Now it’s time to form teams and put their book knowledge to the test—and we need parent volunteers to help!

Help Make Battle of the Books Possible

Please sign up to support our students in one of two ways:

• Help with team registration on September 22, 23 & 25. We need three parent volunteers each day in Room B2 to assist students with signing up and registering their teams. Please arrive at noon on these days to help set up and stay through the lunch sign-up periods.

• Help monitor lunch recess in October and November. Your support with recess supervision allows Principal Pakel to run the Battle of the Books tournament during this time.

Student Team Sign-ups: September 22, 23 & 25

Competition Begins October 6

Battle of the Books runs from October through December, with the final competition in December. Visit the Tournament Schedule & Results tab for competition dates, upcoming matchups, and results.

Lunchtime competitions are student events and are not open to parent attendance. Parent volunteers support the tournament by helping supervise lunch recess while Principal Pakel leads the battles.

2026 Battle of the Books Teams

Our readers are getting ready to team up! Students in grades 3–6 can sign up for Battle of the Books teams in Room B2 on September 22, 23, or 25 during lunch:

• Grade 3: 12:15–12:40 p.m.

• Grades 4–6: 12:45–1:10 p.m.

Tournament Schedule & Results

Battle of the Books competitions begin Tuesday, October 6. Team matchups and brackets will be posted here once teams are formed and the tournament schedule is finalized.

Competition Dates*

Battles will take place during lunch on the following dates:

• October: 6, 7, 9, 13, 14, 16, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27 & 28

• November: 2, 3, 4, 16, 17 & 19

These dates cover the overall tournament. Each team’s assigned match dates will be listed in the brackets once available.

Lunchtime battles are student events, with parent participation limited to scheduled volunteers.

Eligibility and Team Formation

• Battle of the Books is open to students in grades 3–6.

• Each team must have four to six students within one of two competition groups: grades 3–4 or grades 5–6.

• Teams may include students from either or both grades within their group.

• Students will form their own teams and submit a team name along with the names of their team members.

• Teams compete within their combined grade group, with one champion for grades 3–4 and one for grades 5–6.

Match Structure and Rules

• Each match will have a questioner and a timekeeper/judge. The judge will keep track of the score on the score sheet. 

• Teams are responsible for reading the assigned books listed on the website.

• A match will consist of 24 questions. In the event of a tie, three additional questions will be asked to determine the winner.

Question Format

• Questions will alternate between teams.

  • For example, Team 1 will receive the first question. If Team 1 cannot answer, Team 2 may attempt to answer.

  • If Team 1 answers correctly, the next question will go to Team 2.

Answering Rules

• Team members share buzzers. The team member who hits the buzzer must answer the question.

• Teams must wait until the question is fully read before answering.

• Teams have 30 seconds to confer and answer the question. If unanswered, the opposing team has 5 seconds to respond.

Scoring

• 1 point will be awarded for each correct book title.

• 1 extra point may be earned if the original team correctly provides the author’s last name.

• If the opposing team answers a passed-over question correctly, they will not earn the extra point for providing the author’s name.

Additional Rules

• All students must remain seated during the match.

• All judges' decisions are final.

Sportsmanship and Behavior Expectations

• All participants are expected to demonstrate good sportsmanship throughout the competition.

• Teams should be respectful to their opponents, judges, and teammates, regardless of the outcome of a match.

• Cheering for other teams and showing encouragement is encouraged. Negative comments, poor behavior, or unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated.

• If a student or team displays inappropriate behavior, the judges may issue a warning or disqualify the team from the competition.

Competition Format

The tournament includes two practice rounds followed by single-elimination battles. Teams compete in two groups: grades 3–4 and grades 5–6.

Practice Rounds

• Each team participates in two practice battles before elimination rounds begin.

• Practice battles give students experience answering questions and working together as a team.

• A loss during a practice battle does not eliminate a team from the tournament.

Brackets and Byes

Tournament brackets will show each team’s matchups and path through the competition.

Some teams may receive a bye, which allows them to advance to the next round without playing a match in the opening elimination round. Practice-round results will be used to help determine byes. The number of byes and team assignments will be announced when brackets are posted.

Single-Elimination Battles

• After practice rounds, teams enter the single-elimination tournament.

• The winner of each match advances to the next round.

• A team’s first loss during the elimination rounds ends its tournament participation.

• Battles continue until two teams remain in each competition group.

Championship Competition

Battle of the Books competitions take place from October through December, with the final competition held in December. The top two teams in each combined grade group from grades 3–4 and grades 5–6 will compete to determine their group’s winner. The two group winners will then face each other in the final competition to determine one overall school champion. The final competition date and time will be shared once confirmed.

Awards and Recognition

The overall winning team will earn the title and recognition of Silver Oak Battle of the Books Champions.

2026-2027 Battle of the Books Reading Lists for Grades 3-6

Students can continue their reading adventures with the books on our Battle of the Books reading lists. The Battle of the Books program begins in October, but there is still time to explore incredible stories, meet unforgettable characters, and experience thrilling journeys. Many of the books are available in our school library or may be borrowed from the San José Public Library.

The Battle of the Books is a fun and voluntary reading competition where students can test their knowledge of great books in a friendly match-up with classmates. It’s a fantastic way to explore different genres, boost reading skills, and get ready for the big event this fall. Silver Oak students have proudly participated in the Battle of the Books for 14 years, building a strong tradition of reading and teamwork. This program is proudly sponsored by Silver Oak PTO and encourages students to read books that are just right for their grade level. Below are the reading lists for Grades 3–4 and Grades 5–6.

About

Battle of the Books is a national reading incentive program sponsored by Silver Oak PTO that our students have participated in since 2012. Silver Oak students who will be in grades 3-6 in fall are invited to challenge themselves and join the fun! 

Book lists are published at the end of each school year so students can begin reading over the summer.  In the fall, 3rd-6th graders that choose to participate will form teams and compete in a game show style venue where two teams face off at a time to answer questions related to any of the stories on their list. There is no cost to participate in this program and all Battle of the Books are available in the Silver Oak Library.
